ENRE best publication award in Energy of 2020

At the beginning of this week, we were delighted to receive from Golbon Zakeri, the ENRE (Energy, natural resources, and the environment - INFORMS) best publication award in Energy of 2020.

The paper is entitled "Reliable Renewable Generation and Transmission Expansion Planning: Co-Optimizing System’ Resources for Meeting Renewable Targets", and was a joint venture with Alexandre Moreira, a former master student of mine and also a great friend,  and Enzo Sauma, two great friends and research collaborators. It was published in the IEEE Transactions on Power Systems Journal. You can download it in publications: http://www.lamps.ind.puc-rio.br/publicacao/reliable_tep/

We show how to co-optimizing the expansion of the transmission system and renewable generation capacity to meet renewable targets under high-security standards and correlated renewable uncertainty. We also consider the complex interactions between short-term reserves and long-term G&T infrastructure resources.

This and the many other papers I had the opportunity to write in collaboration with Alexandre Moreira more than certify the success of this incredible student, which turned out to be a close and kind friend, and his mother, an incredible and hard worker woman. With a tough story of life, they could succeed and prosper in life despite all the forces that subdue and vanquish millions of families in Brazil. With great faith in God and kindness in his heart, this guy took for serious his mother's daily sacrifice and effort to enable him an appropriate environment wherein his intellectual future could be seeded and harvested. And he honored his mother's suet and calloused hands with pure dedication, working day and night during his undergrad and master internship at LAMPS. It is a great honor for this Lab to be part of such a great story. From LAMPS, Moreira flew directly to Imperial College (UK) to obtain his PhD and is currently working as a postdoc researcher at the Berkely Lab (US).
